Crochet a Ghosty Bookmark!

Writer: Eva PohlerEva Pohler

Two crocheted white ghost figures with tasseled tails sit on a dark-grey laptop. The mood is playful and light.

Aren't these ghosty bookmarks adorable? I love how they stand up and will remain erect at the top of your book once you've closed it and put it on your shelf. It's like little ghosts are sitting on top of your spooky book collection.

The little ghost measures 2.5 inches tall, and with the tail, the total length of the bookmark is 12 inches. If you don't crochet but would like one, you can purchase them for $6.99 USD in my store here.

THE GHOSTY BOOKMARK PATTERN:

For this project, I used a medium, worsted yarn (4 ply) and a 5 mm crochet hook.

Round 1: In a magic ring, single crochet 6 (for a tighter stitch, yarn under instead of over on the first step of each single crochet). Also, don't work in the tail. Leave it out.

Round 2: Increase in each stitch to make 12 stitches.

Round 3: (Single Crochet, Increase) x 6 to make 18 stiches.

Rounds 4-10: Single crochet each round (18 stitches each round)

Round 11: (Single Crochet 2, Increase) x 6 to total 24 stitches

Round 12: (Single Crochet 3, Increase) x 6 to total 30 stiches. Then slip stitch to end the round and tie off. You can pinch the middle of the ghosty to shape it how you want it.

Now it's time to add the eyes. You could embroider them with black thread, or you could use these plastic animal eyes. If your stitches are tight, you can use the smallest ones, but if not, use a size that won't slip through the holes in between the stitches.

Space them however you like. I prefer to have three stitches between them, and I like when one eye is just slightly lower than the other.

Once the eyes are secure, reach in through the bottom of your ghosty and grab the tail, pulling it to the inside.

Then with a new thread, chain 35, tie off.

Next, tie the end of that chain to the ghosty's tail. You can turn the ghosty inside out to accomplish this.

Then, make a tassel however thick and long you like them. I make mine by wrapping the yarn around my hand 8 times.

Next, I tie the top of the threads together like this:

Then I tie the tassel together like this:

Next, I slip my crochet hook through the top loops of the tassel and grab the other tail on my chain, pulling it through the top of the tassel:

Then, I secure the tassel to the end of the chain, cut the bottom of the tassel loops to create the fringe, and voila! The ghosty bookmark is complete!

Otherwise, Happy Crocheting! And, as always, Happy Reading!
